What is a Data Layer?
One of the most common mistakes made when configuring Server Side Tracking is not having a proper data layer. This can result in inaccurate or incomplete data collection, leading to unreliable analytics and insights.
A data layer is a bit like an intermediary or interpreter between your Web site and analytics or marketing tools such as Google Tag Manager. It is a structure used to store information about the actions visitors take on your website - such as viewing pages, adding products to a shopping cart or completing a purchase - in an organized way.
You can think of it as a digital notebook that keeps track of all the important events and details about how people interact with your site. This information is then used to perform analysis, create reports, and optimize marketing campaigns.
In practice, this means that when someone does something on your website, such as buying a product, the data layer captures this action with relevant details such as the product, price, and quantity. This is often done through JavaScript, but the data layer itself is more of a concept or structure for data storage, and not necessarily a piece of code.
In short, a data layer helps keep your website's data neat and accessible for analysis and marketing purposes, without having to manually collect or enter information every time.
Setting up a Data Layer manually can be complicated. That's why we have apps / plugins for different platforms (CMS) that allow you to set up a data layer for your website in just a few clicks.
How GTM Uses the Data Layer
Google Tag Manager uses the information in the data layer to trigger triggers, which in turn fire tags. For example, a tag might be set to fire every time a product is added to the shopping cart, an event captured in the data layer. GTM "listens" for these events through the data layer, allowing it to trigger the right tag at the right time without requiring any direct changes to website code. Below is an example of what the data layer in Google Tag Manager looks like.

Installation Process
Installing the appp is simple and intuitive. Once you have opened the app there are 3 steps to go through.
1. Install TAGGRS - Lightspeed Data Layer Plugin.
Login to your Lightspeed (Ecwid) shop and go to the app market within your dashboard.
2. Download the TAGGRS app
Search for TAGGRS , then click on the app install the app.
3. TAGGRS - Lightspeed Data Layer App setup.
Under Google Tag ID, enter the GTM code for interfacing with Google Tag Manager. This is the GTM code for the Web Container. Do you want to use the TAGGRS Enhanced Tracking Script? Then add your subdomain under Tracking domain here. For the Enhanced Tracking Script, you can use the same subdomain as for the server container. However, this is not required!
4. Add events in data layer app
Next, you choose which events you want to have in the Ecwid data layer. Some events, such as pageview, are already automatically included in Google Tag Manager. Then save the data layer by clicking Save.
5. Data layer testing in Google Tag Manager
We will now test if the data layer actually works. Go to the Google Tag Manager preview mode, create an event, then click on data layer and here you can see that your Lightspeed data is coming in nicely structured.
6. Sending data to relevant platforms
Want to make sure the data is forwarded as events to your relevant platform? Then make sure you have all tags and triggers set up properly. Check out our implementation guides and videos within our TAGGRS software for more information.
