What is a Data Layer?

One of the most common mistakes made when configuring Server Side Tracking is not having a proper data layer. As a result, data may be collected inaccurately or incompletely, leading to unreliable analyses and insights.

A data layer is a bit like an intermediary or an interpreter between your website and analytics or marketing tools such as Google Tag Manager. It is a structure used to save information about the actions visitors perform on your website – such as viewing pages, adding products to a shopping cart or completing a purchase – in an organized way.

You can think of it as a digital notebook that keeps track of all the important events and Details about how people interact with your site. This information is then used to perform analysis, create reports, and optimize marketing campaigns.

In practice, this means that when someone does something on your website, such as buying a product, the data layer captures this action with relevant details such as the product, price, and quantity. This is often done through JavaScript, but the data layer itself is more of a concept or structure for data storage, and not necessarily a piece of code.

In short, a data layer helps keep your website’s data neat and accessible for analysis and marketing purposes, without having to manually collect or enter information every time.

Setting up a Data Layer manually can be complicated. That is why we have apps / plugins for different platforms (CMS) that allow you to set up a data layer for your website within a few clicks.

How GTM Uses the Data Layer

Use Google Tag Manager uses the information in the data layer to trigger triggers, which in turn fire tags. For example, a tag may be set to fire every time a product is added to the shopping cart, an event captured in the data layer. GTM “listens” for these events through the data layer, allowing it to trigger the right tag at the right time without requiring direct changes to website code. Below is an example of what the data layer in Google Tag Manager looks like.
