How TAGGRS and RUMvision work together for faster websites and better data foundations

At TAGGRS, we believe good decisions start with good data. Why the industry is leaving browser-based tracking behind

For years, the standard way to collect data was to let the browser send it straight to your marketing and analytics platforms. That approach is becoming less dependable every year.

Browsers like Safari and Firefox now block third-party cookies by default and keep tightening their tracking-prevention rules. Ad blockers remove requests to tracking domains before they run. On top of that, privacy regulations have made it mandatory for companies to take real responsibility for how data is collected and shared. 

This creates two problems at once. The first is a data problem: the events you're relying on to measure conversions, retarget and make budget decisions are getting dropped, so your platforms end up working from an incomplete picture. That's the issue that TAGGRS addresses. 

The second is a performance problem. All those tags, pixels and blocked requests still run in the visitor's browser, adding work to every page load whether or not the data ever arrives. This is the part that RUMvision measures.

How the browser slows down your site

The performance side of that deserves a closer look, because it gets far less attention than the privacy aspect.

Over a site’s life, browser-based tracking accumulates and tags pile up as new tools, advertising pixels and scripts get added. They are rarely removed and often become forgotten as they continue piling up. 

All this slows pages down and drags on the metrics that reflect real experience, like how quickly a page responds when someone interacts with it. A site can be well built and feel sluggish, purely because of how much tracking has gathered in the browser over time.

The benefits of a first-party setup

A first-party setup provides a stronger foundation in the current technological landscape. Instead of firing data straight from the browser to a dozen external platforms, you first send it to infrastructure you control, where it can be validated and forwarded to the tools that need it. First-party requests aren't blocked the way external tracking calls are, and first-party cookies last longer than the heavily restricted third-party kind. This is more resilient to browser changes, and it gives teams far more ownership over their data.

Server-side tracking is how that setup gets built, and it's at the core of what we do at TAGGRS. Rather than every tag running in the visitor's browser, data is collected once and sent to a server you control. From there, you decide what gets validated, enriched, and forwarded to each destination.

This takes work out of the browser, since tags that used to run on the page can run server-side instead. Moving to server-side tracking is a chance to review the whole tracking setup, such as which scripts need to run in the browser, which tags are still in use, and which requests can be removed, combined, or moved. Made deliberately, those choices lead to lighter pages and a cleaner data flow.

What the shift means in practice

Put together, moving from third-party scripts to a first-party foundation tends to produce three things: 

  • Lighter pages, because less tracking runs in the browser
  • More reliable data, because collection no longer depends on the browser cooperating
  • Less exposure to further browser and privacy changes, because you're no longer built on a model that's going away 

Several RUMvision customers are already running TAGGRS, and in the first implementations we've seen improvements in performance metrics like INP and TTFB. 

The exact impact depends on the site and its setup, which is why tracking and performance are always worth looking at together rather than in isolation.
